The manor is documented for the first time as "castrum" in 1176 even if you believe that the castle there was already much older age. Since the twelfth century castle becomes the property of Gherardeschi, used to defend against pirates Saracens and then, at the end of the thirteenth century, was the residence of the Counts of Biserno rebels of the Municipality of Pisa.
